Custom-molded orthotics alleviate foot pain, but like any product, they don’t last forever.
Sometimes, the gradual signs of wear and tear on your orthotics can be tricky to spot. Here are some signs that your orthotics are nearing the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced:
#1: You Are Experiencing Pain
Your custom-molded orthotics should give your feet relief. If your feet or ankles begin hurting again after you get orthotics, it could mean they are wearing out. You may also experience pain in your hips or lower back.
Additionally, pay attention to any new pain you experience, such as the growth of calluses or corns. These are caused by friction between your foot and footwear, signifying that your orthotics are wearing thin.
#2: You’ve Had Lifestyle Changes
Drastic changes to your lifestyle can influence the effectiveness of your orthotics. Losing or gaining weight or changing your exercise habits can affect how well your custom-molded orthotics fit your feet.
Significant medical events such as pregnancy or surgery can also change your walking mechanics, affecting how your orthotics fit you. If you experience these changes, your orthotics may need updating.
#3: Your Custom Orthotics Show Signs of Damage
You should regularly examine your orthotics for signs of wear and tear, such as:
- Cracking, warping, or buckling on the base
- Thinness or tears in the top cover.
- Flattened arches that no longer support your feet
Some of these issues may not lead to replacement. If only the top cover is damaged, refurbishing or repairing your orthotics may be possible. Talk with your doctor or podiatrist about your options.
#4: Your Shoes are Uneven
You can also examine your shoes for wear. If your shoes are wearing out more on one side than the other, it can indicate improper alignment and uneven weight distribution; these issues with your orthotics could cause you to feel unbalanced when walking.
#5: Your Orthotics have an Unpleasant Odor
Sweat and bacteria can gather on your orthotics over time, so cleaning them regularly is essential. However, as your orthotics age, cleaning may no longer improve the odor, and it may be time to replace them.
#6: It’s the End of Your Orthotics’ Lifespan
Custom molded orthotics can last for years, but most pairs need replacing within two to three years.
Your body changes over time. As your feet change and grow, your custom-molded orthotics need to be updated to accommodate changes in your body type and walking mechanics.
