With the New Year comes new goals! If you’re a runner, one of those goals might be to run a marathon in 2022. As you’re training for the big race, don’t forget to prep your feet. They’re the things that will carry you across the finish line, so make sure you’re taking proper care of them. Keep reading for our best tips!
Start Your Foot Prep Early
You should start toughening up your feet at least three weeks before your marathon. What we mean by “toughening” up your feet is hardening your plantar fat pad. This will stop the area from getting sensitive during your long run! There are two steps to toughening your feet up:
Apply Acid Products to Your Feet
There are plenty of these products developed by sports brands to toughen up the skin on your feet, but some athletes just use lemon juice! Every morning, apply your chosen products to the most sensitive areas of your feet.
Moisturize
The second step to this process is to moisturize those same areas. The acid in lemon juice or store-bought products can dry out the skin on your feet, so it’s important to moisturize every evening with anti-friction or moisturizing cream.
Anti-Friction Cream
Speaking of anti-friction cream, this is a must-have product for marathon foot care! You’re going to be running over 26 miles. That can cause blisters and irritation no matter how broken in your shoes are. For at least two weeks before your race, apply a small amount of anti-friction cream to your feet every day.
When you’re out training, pay attention to where there might be rubbing or chafing and take special care of those spots.
Wear the Right Socks & Shoes
While anti-friction cream can go a long way, it’s crucial that you wear the right socks and shoes for your big race. Instead of regular socks, invest in some technical running socks. If you’re running 26 miles, your feet are going to sweat regardless of the weather outside. Technical socks will help them stay dry and comfortable.
Additionally, make sure you’re wearing proper footwear that’s suited for your feet and gait. Make note that they’re broken in as well! One of the first things any experienced marathon runner will tell you is not to change anything about what you’re wearing right before the race. A new pair of socks can make a huge difference over that many miles!
